Epoxy vs Polyaspartic Garage Floor: Which Should You Choose?
If you are pricing a garage floor coating on Oahu, you will hear two words over and over: epoxy and polyaspartic. They are not rivals so much as teammates. Here is how each one works, where each one shines, and why many garage systems use both.
The short answer
Epoxy is usually the base: it bonds to ground concrete and builds thickness. Polyaspartic is usually the topcoat: it is UV-stable and generally cures faster. A full polyaspartic system is also an option. What matters most is that the slab is prepared properly and that you compare quotes for the same build.
How epoxy works on a garage floor
Epoxy is a two-part coating that hardens into a tough, bonded layer. In a garage system it is often used as the bonding coat and base coat, carrying the color and holding the flake broadcast.
Strengths: strong bond to prepared concrete, builds thickness, long working time for the crew.
Watch-outs: conventional epoxy can amber (yellow) with UV exposure, and it generally takes longer to cure than polyaspartic.
How polyaspartic works on a garage floor
Polyaspartic is a type of aliphatic polyurea. It is most often used as the clear topcoat, and some installers use it for the base coat as well.
Strengths: UV-stable, resists yellowing, generally faster cure, good abrasion and chemical resistance as a topcoat.
Watch-outs: a short working time means it needs an experienced crew, and a fast cure does not make up for poor prep.
Side by side
Factor | Epoxy | Polyaspartic |
|---|---|---|
Usual role | Bonding coat and base coat | Clear topcoat, or full system |
Bond to concrete | Strong when the slab is ground | Strong when the slab is ground |
Sunlight | Can yellow with UV | UV-stable |
Cure speed | Slower | Generally faster |
Working time | Longer | Shorter |
Why Honolulu garages often use both
Many island garages keep the door open for airflow, so sunlight reaches the floor every day. An epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat gives the bond and build of epoxy with a UV-stable surface on top. For garages in rainy windward areas or near the shore, a textured flake broadcast and an anti-slip additive in the topcoat add grip when floors get wet.
Questions to ask before you choose
Is the quote for an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat, or a full polyaspartic system?
How will the slab be prepared, and will moisture be tested?
How many coats are included, and is a flake or quartz broadcast part of it?
What are the walk-on and drive-on times for this system in current conditions?
Is crack repair included?
